Varsity girls basketball to play against The Sanger
Varsity girls basketball will play against The Sanger at home on Nov. 28 after winning 82-18 against Creekview on Nov. 20.
Varsity traveled to Baytown to play in the Pelly Division of the Baytown Tournament Nov. 8 through 10. Not only did they play in the tournament, but they also brought home the championship.
“Our purpose for going to Baytown included but was not limited to team bonding, competing against teams from different parts of Texas, and winning a championship,” head coach Lisa Branch said. “We were able to check all of those boxes.”
Varsity defeated the Dayton Broncos 69-28, defeated Cypress Ridge Rams 66-26 and defeated LaPorte 79-38 in the championship game. All players played and scored in all three games.
“We started back at the first week of school with small workouts,” Branch said. “We started working out in-season in October and that consisted of team defenses and team offenses.”
Basketball started its off-season workout at the start of September which usually is a six week process and transition to in-season as basketball season arrives.
“The goal of this year is to make it to playoffs,” Branch said “It’s a pretty realistic goal because we have the players we need to get there.”
Varsity has six new additions to its team, freshman Cammie McKinney, sophomores Camille Thomas, Jasmyn Loudermill and Demauria Miles, and juniors Courtlyn Loudermill and Anna Grimsley.
“Our game was really good,” McKinney said. “We really played as a team and I’m excited for the rest of the season.”
Junior Sierra Dickson said that varsity got a lot of deflections, steals and easy layups in its game against North Garland.
“Judging from the past two years, we definitely have a better team,” Dickson said. “We’re a lot stronger this year than other districts.”
Sophomore Rija Waqar is a reporter and this is her first year on staff. She enjoys making art, reading and writing.
