Hebron falls to Keller 6-1 in Game 1 of Regional Quarterfinals
The Hawks opened up the three game series against Keller with a 6-1 loss on May 19. Hebron’s offense propelled the team to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, thanks to an RBI from senior first baseman Jarrett Farley. Later on in the inning, the Hawks were unable to capitalize on a bases-loaded situation when Derek Mueller grounded out into a double play. Starting pitcher Nick Fraze had a strong start, pitching a shutout through the first four innings.
Things went downhill for the Hawks in the fifth inning, though, as Fraze’s no hit bid and shutout came to an abrupt end due to a string of hits and errors. Hebron’s run of misfortune began with a ground ball mishandled by second baseman Austin Stone, allowing the first Keller baserunner. In the next at-bat, Keller capitalized when a throw from Mueller got past third baseman Micah Lloyd, which allowed the first run to come across and tie the game 1-1. RBI hits from Mikey Brinton, Matt Cavanagh, and Hunter Seay capped off the four-run fifth inning for Keller.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Keller held a 4-1 lead. Fraze continued to pitch the late innings and gave up two more runs in the sixth. One of the runs came on a throwing error from Lloyd, attempting to turn a double play but throwing the ball past the reach of Stone. Keller’s bullpen provided three and a half innings of shutout relief, closing the game and securing a 6-1 victory.
Game two of the three game series will be held May 20 at 4:30 p.m. at Dallas Baptist University as the Hawks look to force a decisive third game May 21 at 6:30.
