Allen edges Hawks in extra innings
The baseball team (20-6 overall, 10-3 district) lost its second district game in the past week on Tuesday night at Allen (14-11, 7-6). Junior Zach Deloach pitched 7.2 innings along with 13 strikeouts before a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Allen the upset. After getting a run across in the top of the third inning, disaster struck in the home half of the third as senior outfielder Jake Genard laid out and barely missed a liner in left field. The ball rolled past him and the Eagles were able to get two runs. Allen held the lead until the seventh inning, when senior catcher Michael Neustifter and Deloach each knocked in a run to even the score at three and force the game into extra innings. The Hawks left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, and the Eagles capitalized in the bottom of the inning when senior pitcher Cole Maxwell hit a sacrifice fly to left field that gave Genard no attempt at throwing out the runner heading home. The Hawks play Allen again on Friday at Hawk Stadium at 7:30 p.m. with Flower Mound (20-6, 9-4) just one game back.
