The girls golf team will compete in the district tournament March 25-26 starting at 8 a.m.
The team will be competing at Bear Creek Golf Club. The tournament consists of teams of five from both varsity and junior varsity. The girls will shoot their individual scores and combine them as a team, and must place first or second as an individual or team to move on to regionals.
“We’ve been working very hard, and [our] improvement is showing,” sophomore Delaney Anderson said. “I’m very confident that we can make it past districts.”
The team has practiced at Bear Creek throughout the season to become familiar with the golf course. The tournament consists of 36 holes over the span of two days and will take five to six hours each day.
“It’s a very tight golf course,” head coach Jeff Fields said. “[The girls will] have to drive the ball straight, which is to our advantage. In golf, [we] play so many different courses, [but] Bear Creek fits our [style of play.]”
Captain and senior Stalee Fields said the team has been concentrating on their short game, such as chipping and putting. On Nov. 22-23, Stalee finished first runner up out of the five girls during the state preview at White Wing Golf Club.
“This is what we work for throughout the whole year,” Stalee said. “Around the greens at Bear Creek, you [have] to be pretty careful. You can get into some tricky spots if you don’t.”
During the fall district preview at Bear Creek Nov. 8-9, Varsity Ladies Black finished in fourth place.
“Golf is a mental game,” Anderson said. “It’s hard to be focused for that long, but [it helps] staying relaxed and knowing that we’ve gone through all [of] this preparation.”
If the team or any players qualify for regionals, the tournament will take place at Tangle Ridge Golf Course Apr. 14-17.
“In the beginning of the year, we were treading in the right direction,” Fields said. “We’ve had good finishes from the previous tournaments, [but] Coppell and Flower Mound are good [opponents]. We’re going to have to play our best to beat them in the next couple days.”
