Softball to compete in Ellis County Varsity Tournament
The softball team will begin the Ellis County Varsity Tournament with a game against Paris North Lamar today at 3 p.m. at Midlothian ISD stadium.
The team has six games in the round-robin tournament. They have two games on Thursday that will be played at Midlothian ISD stadium, two on Friday at Waxahachie High School and two on Saturday at Midlothian again.
“The tournament is our last chance to truly prepare for district, so we need to be clicking on all cylinders,” head coach Jason Gwyn said. “We need to be executing offensively and defensively at a high rate.”
Gwyn said the team is skilled and talented so they have spent the offseason working on mental strength and game situations. He said the team’s strength offensively is their versatility, as they have players who can hit for power and players who can run. He also believes in key positions, such as pitcher, the team excels.
“I’ll be honest, I think this year having very high, lofty expectations for this team is actually pretty realistic,” Gwyn said.
Gwyn said for the most part the lineup is set but he could make a few adjustments to the batting order to find the best combination. He said the team needs to know that they are prepared for the first district game next Tuesday against Plano East.
“Hebron softball has never won a district championship and that is one thing the players have been very adamant about,” Gwyn said. “And if that’s the case at the end of Saturday, they need to know within themselves that they are ready and capable.”
