The Idea of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not new, but the risks are.
AI is a great tool and can be beneficial, but the downsides are seriously detrimental to the future of the world. It is important to be educated on these said risks.
Companies like OpenAI, Google and Bing have begun making AI that compiles what is on the internet into text essays, such as ChatGPT. Recently, Open AI has revealed a new text-to-video platform called SORA, where one can write a few paragraphs describing a video, and it makes it come to life.
When people refer to robot-related risks, they are usually thinking of something out of “Terminator” or “Detroit: Become Human.” But, the real risks don’t lie in killer robots or imposters. Instead, they lie in text-to-video and the choices that come with the honor systems implemented.
The company responsible for ChatGPT and SORA – OpenAI – has some form of control in the form of usage policies, but it is not that hard to work around it or use a different platform with weaker rules. Anyone with bad intentions and a creative mind can go wild with text-to-video, considering only three states have specific laws regulating AI.
The dark side of AI has mostly been scam-related. For instance, AI voice mimics have already been used for phishing scams in which a voice cue that sounds like a loved one is calling your phone and asking you for money. Other crimes and offenses have been linked to fake pornographic images and demanding money out of the person being extorted.
If we, as a society, want to limit these dangerous situations, then more state legislators must pass laws regarding AI. Laws to allow the crimes committed by inappropriate use of AI to have more serious implications.
The fact that humans can simulate something of this caliber on a computer out of seemingly nothing is astonishing, but we are being thrown into an era in society where you cannot believe everything you see. Change must be made, otherwise, we’ll be stuck with the consequences as technology advances further.
