[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]There is nothing more comforting to me than the atmosphere of a bookstore. It’s a privilege to get lost in the tall shelves while discovering what could become my new favorite book. Unfortunately, experiencing this may not be an option in the future. People can access almost anything online now, including books. Whether it’s simply purchasing books online or downloading electronic versions, the rise in e-books has led to a sharp decline in library and bookstore attendance. Adult fiction print sales have dropped by more than $200 million since 2009, according to studies conducted by Nielsen BookScan.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]E-books simply do not measure up to the greatness of real books. There are several reasons why we should opt for reading paper books rather than electronic ones.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]
- They spark conversation.
If I see someone with a book, I ask them about it, such as what it’s about, and if they recommend it. When people read on their phones, it isn’t always obvious that they’re reading. I would generally just assume someone on their phone is texting, playing a game, or on social media. Phones limit conversation, and we already use them constantly in place of many other things; calendars, calculators, notebooks, etc. We can’t let phones replace books, too. If we do, we are throwing away what could be great opportunities for conversation and human interaction.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]
- Screens aren’t safe.
The harsh light from phone and tablet screens can lead to eye damage and headaches. We don’t need electronics for everything. After a long day of retweeting and watching Vines, it’s nice to sit back with a cup of hot coffee and a good book.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]
- Real books are full of life.
When you open an old book you are met with dog-eared corners, an old book smell, and pages that are bent, stained, or torn. Occasionally, you may even find notes or highlighting. Through these things you can see and feel the journey of previous readers. Paper books are full of history, full of life. E-books are lifeless, just words on a screen.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Technology is incredible. Humans have made great strides in discovering new things, and inventing helpful tools. Are e-books more convenient and easier to carry around? Sure. But they are nothing compared to real, live books, which are better for your eyes, and a little more exciting.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
