The theater department will perform its play, “Night of Love Songs” on Feb. 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Black Box. It will consist of seven love songs.
“High school students should be able to [put] together a showcase, ” head director Chelsey Thornburg said. “Especially if you have seniors leading it.”
The showcase is designed to create a “coffee shop vibe” that allows people to move around the black box while the performance is going on. Food will be provided, consisting mainly of desserts.
“We are going to enforce a more ‘go with the flow’ pattern than last year,” special events head Grant Koch said. “Even though last year we said it was more hang around, free move space, everyone still just sat in the black box.”
There were no rehearsals for the showcase. Students were expected to learn their song and find a backing track before auditions.
“[We’re] going to let [the students]go out there and do their thing,” Koch said.
The songs are required to be more upbeat than last year’s, and they have to be about, or relate to, love. Auditions were open to anyone in the Thespian Honor Society.
“This is the only chance I have to do a singing performance,” sophomore Emmy Hernandez said.
The initial idea was originally called “The Lonely Hearts Club” before it was changed to be “Night of Love Songs.” Thornburg said she thought it would be more clear what the showcase was.
“I told the officers I would like to keep it [next year,]” Thornburg said. “We can do more showcases, it’s just a matter of the planning needing to be taken off me and [assistant director Logan] McGraw.”
