The Impact club is hosting a winter canned food drive until Dec. 20. Donations will be accepted in room 2635 on the main campus.
“This time of year we are celebrating a lot,” club sponsor Carrie Roberts said. “[This is] a time when [families need a little extra.”
The club is accepting donations of 18-ounce cans of soup, canned turkey and tuna, 20-ounce jars of jelly, instant oatmeal packs, single serving snacks, boxed cereal, 15-ounce cans of chili, single serving applesauce and 15-ounce cans of pasta.
“Any [amount of donations] would make a difference,” Lester said. “But, I’m hoping for more than 50 items.”
This is the Impact club’s first event. The club was founded this year by juniors Finley Lester and Alice Chi. It’s based on the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs). The canned food drive is based on goal number two: zero hunger.
“[The SDGs] encompass everything that we feel is valuable and should be improved in our society,” Lester said.
All donations will be sent to Lovepacs Lewisville, a charity that aims to provide food for food-insecure children over school breaks when they aren’t getting free lunches.
“[Lovepacs does] a really good job of having a specific list of things that they need for certain events,” Lester said. “I felt like we could get more donations if we chose something that people were familiar with.”
Updates will be posted on the Hebron’s Impact Instagram page. Chi and Lester have said they have plans for Impact’s future events, including a potential recycling-based project.
“We’re making these Lovepacs for a reason: to help people who truly need it,” Chi said. “Through making these little differences, they will lead to bigger differences, and that’s what we ultimately strive for.”
