The Muslim Student Association (MSA) and Hebron Asian Student Association (HASA) will host a glow-in-the-dark volleyball tournament on Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. in the main gym. Seven teams will compete for a cash prize. After hosting the event last year, HASA co-president Aishi Setiawan said they hope to make it an annual event.
“In past years, we’ve had trouble with member engagement,” Setiawan said. “Even though we had many people join, a lot of people [joined] because they wanted a time to meet with their friends during school. [They] wouldn’t take the time to do hours or attend events. Last year, we realized [that] this is an event that people come to which brought member engagement.”
Setiawan and MSA president Imara Vidhani said they faced various difficulties during the planning process because of a tight budget and limited resources. MSA held a bake sale to fundraise money. The event was originally meant to be held around Halloween but was pushed back to find a location.
“We tried finding centers around the area, but many were very expensive,” Setiawen said. “Some locations would not allow people [who were] not a part of their community or church, and finding somewhere with little-to-no cost was an obstacle.”
Vidhani said MSA is a club intended to bring awareness to Muslims and allow them to interact with each other as well as those who hope to learn about the Islamic faith. With MSA having 53 members, Vidhani said she hopes by collaborating with HASA, a club with just under 200 members, the event will help increase the club’s reach.
“I hope by collaborating with other clubs and getting our name out there, MSA can gain more attraction,” Vidhani said. “We want to have people join [to] build a community and make a difference.”
