After the outbreak of the new COVID-19 delta variant, health officials have recommended a third dose and booster shot of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine.

Data began to develop indicating the new variant is more infectious and five times more transmissible than past variants of COVID-19. Fully vaccinated people can still be infected with the delta variant, but are shown to be infectious for a lesser amount of time.

Although the Center for Disease Control (CDC), has said masks do not have to be worn regardless of vaccination status, it is recommended for people to wear masks indoors. Wearing masks helps maximize protection from the new variant and prevents the spread of the virus.

The CDC has recommended the third dose to people who are immunocompromised. The third shot will help people who have an impaired immune system boost their immunity. The booster shot can be given to the general public at least eight months after their second dose of the vaccine. Although the third dose has been confirmed for Moderna and Pfizer, there have been no recommendations for the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
