Librarian Liz Harrison brought in a rental petting zoo on April 15 as a finale for ‘Reading Rodeo’ week in the library, which introduced over 1,000 new books available for students to check out.
“These days, librarians have to work harder than ever to keep students reading,” Harrison said. “Students have so many choices now that compete with reading like the iPhone, sports, clubs, activities, AP classes, etc. that I feel I need to generate excitement about books in any way that I can. Connecting the Reading Rodeo theme with farm animals just sounded like fun that would stir up excitement and interest in the library.”
Animals such as llamas, ducks, sheep and donkeys were available to pet free of charge. The petting zoo was set up outside by the library windows throughout all four lunches.
