Junior shares experiences in choir

It all started by accident.

As an eighth grader, Greta Knight wanted to play basketball and perform in theater; however, she would go into her freshman year placed in concert choir, barely knowing how to read music.

Now a junior, Knight has made All-State two times in a row and was invited to the most recent Southwestern American Choral Directors Association (SWACDA) convention. She is continuing her choir journey into her senior year, hoping to make All-State for a third time.

“A lot of the things that I’ve been able to do like All-State and SWACDA, I’m in with a lot of my friends,” Knight said. “Being able to do all of this fun stuff with people who are just as motivated as I am and [are] some of my best friends -– it’s been really fun.”

The original electives Knight put on her freshman year schedule were full; therefore, she was placed in concert choir with a group of approximately 90 other students. Knight’s freshman year was the first year the choir had switched from online schooling, and a group of students who were either not in LISD or not in choir the year before, were all placed in concert choir, which yielded a larger group than directors anticipated.

Despite these challenges, head director Alex Carr said that once Knight joined the show choir, he could truly see her individual talent. Carr said that Knight is one of the top musicians he has ever taught.

“Individual accomplishments are really student-driven,” head director Alex Carr said. “If you work hard and prepare, [those opportunities are] there for you. I’m really proud of her, not only for her talent, but also the work that she put in.”

Senior Anna Garcia said that she helped Knight through her first All-State process sophomore year. They attended All-State and SWACDA together and have been close friends since.

“She is really able to command a stage,” Garcia said. “She’s very expressive and she can do that with just her voice alone, but with her facial expressions too. It’s so awesome to see her perform because she really gets into it.”

Knight’s parents have worked in music ministries for their church throughout her life. Her father is also currently working on music projects for Disney World. Knight said that growing up surrounded by music her whole life contributed to her growing love for the art.

“I always grew up knowing music would be my thing,” Knight said. “High school just confirmed that for me. I am proud of myself, but I don’t think that I’m the best or that I’m better than everybody else here. [However], I do know that I have the credibility to prove that I am a good singer.”

While Knight said she is currently unsure what she wants to do in college, she is sure that she wants to do something related to music like musical theater, music education or vocal performance.

“She’s a very powerful singer,” Garcia said. “She always adds her own flare to music; you can really tell it’s Greta whenever she’s singing.”
