Cookie Competition

Chocolate chip and sugar cookies from Cookie Society, Tiff’s Treats and HEB Bakery sit assembled on a plate. The large back two are from Cookie Society, the two on the left are from Tiff’s Treats and the rest are from HEB Bakery. All these bakeries are located in the Frisco area.

As someone whose favorite dessert is cookies and spends way too much money on them, I was excited to hear about National Cookie Day on Dec. 4. To commemorate the day, I compared the classic cookies – chocolate chip and sugar – from three different stores: Cookie Society, Tiff’s Treats and HEB Bakery.

I usually prefer chocolate chip cookies over any cookie, but I decided to try sugar cookies out to see what they are all about. Each cookie was rated on affordability, look, taste, size and bite, and given a final rating out of 10. Each cookie was compared to the same flavor of cookie from each bakery.

Cookie Society

Price – $3.95

The moment that I bought this cookie, I was shocked at how huge it was. The chocolate chips seemed more like chocolate discs. I loved this cookie for its flavorful taste, but it felt like there was too much salt.

The best part about this cookie was that it had the perfect bite. The middle was soft and gooey and the crust was crunchy. The cookie didn’t feel too hard or too soft. As I ate this cookie, it didn’t break apart.

I would rate this a seven out of 10.

Tiff’s Treats

Price – $1.70

This cookie was relatively small; it was the same size as a Chips Ahoy cookie, which we all know is not very big. I do wish it was bigger since I did pay more than what I got. This cookie was delicious because the quality of the chocolate chips was amazing. Out of all the cookies I tasted, this one had the best chocolate. The cookie wasn’t too sweet, but it wasn’t too salty. I enjoyed not feeling sick after I ate this because of how great the quality of the cookie was, unlike cookies at a lot of other bakeries.

This cookie was crunchier than the average cookie. It broke apart with each bite I took. I wish it was a little softer, especially in the middle.

I would rate this an eight out of 10.

HEB Bakery

Price – $4.98 for a pack of 18

I knew that cookies from stores such as HEB, Target, Kroger or any other grocery store are usually not the best. However, I had to try cookies from HEB because of its new location that recently opened in Frisco. I was excited to see how there were so many cookies and the box was not expensive. These cookies had the best size: fulfilling you without anything left over.

This cookie was tough, though. Even when I warmed the cookie, it was very crunchy, and I don’t enjoy crunchy cookies at all. I wish it was softer and I wish the chocolate would melt into the cookie more, as it left a dry taste and a lot to be desired.

I would rate this a four out of 10.

Once again, this cookie was huge, but it was amazing. I loved every bite of this cookie. As someone who literally hates sugar cookies because they always taste bland to me, I was shocked. Not only did the cookie taste delicious, but it looked stunning. There were white, green and red sprinkles on it, which made the cookie look more festive.

This cookie was more on the sweeter side, which was great. Something about Cookie Society is that the cookies are always either too salty or too sweet. Their flavors are extreme, which can make the cookie either a hit or miss. It was so soft to the point that when I would take a bite, a lot of the cookie would break off. However, this cookie was a hit and it did melt in my mouth.

I would rate this a nine out of 10.

Tiff’s Treats

Price – $1.70

Even though this sugar cookie was small, it was delicious. This cookie had sugar sprinkled on the top and was almost like a churro. Every bite had the right amount of sweetness. If the sugar had not been there, then this cookie would not have been as great. The actual cookie was bland and I wish it had more flavor.

This cookie did have a softer inside and a thicker crust. I did appreciate that this cookie did not break apart while I ate it.

I would rate this an eight out of 10.

HEB Bakery

Price – $4.98 for a pack of 18

This cookie was horrible.

When I ate it, it felt like I was eating nothing. There was no flavor whatsoever, and I would not recommend buying this cookie. The cookie didn’t even look pleasing, it just looked like a brown, regular cookie — there was nothing special about it. Not even the decent size could save it.

The sugar cookie was not soft at all; instead one of the toughest I’ve ever eaten. I didn’t enjoy this cookie and, even though it was cheap, I would not buy it again.

I would rate this a three out of 10.

Overall:

All three of these places are great to go to if you’re looking for something sweet to eat. However, I will say that the winner is Tiff’s Treats. It is more affordable, the cookies are not too big and the quality of their delicious cookies is wonderful.
