The fastest hedgehog in pop culture had his second movie debut with “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” which premiered in theaters on April 8. The story, while having a few boring moments with the human characters, was packed with moments everyone can enjoy. Additionally, this movie was definitely made for the fans, as opposed to the studio getting involved.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 2” takes a greater step forward than the first film by introducing two fan-favorite characters, Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessy). Elba brings a hilarious but menacing feel to Knuckles. O’Shaughnessy, the original voice actor for Tails, also helps bring a new layer to Sonic’s dynamic character by creating a brotherly bond between the two characters.

The movie continues Sonic’s story as he tries to gain more freedom and live his life as a hero away from his friend, Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). The moment Sonic gains some freedom, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) comes back with Knuckles. Knuckles is on the hunt for the Master Emerald, the most powerful weapon in the universe. On Sonic’s way to find the mystery jewel, he meets Tails, who has come to warn him of  Knuckles.

The new characters are an amazing addition to the movie, Jim Carrey steals every scene he’s in with his charismatic performance of Dr. Robotnik. Carrey’s performance is reminiscent of roles he’s played in movies like “The Mask” and “Ace Ventura.” With this being one of Carrey’s last roles before he retires, he went all in on his performance to make it as memorable as ever.

Overall, the movie is a great continuation in the Sonic the Hedgehog series that shows how video game movies should be made. The movie, while targeted toward a young audience, is a lot of fun even for adults. I’d recommend this movie to anyone who has a love for Sonic as a character or just wants to enjoy a good popcorn movie.
