After the end of “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” fans were ecstatic to swing into the next film in what should’ve been Tom Holland’s sixth appearance as the iconic webslinger. However, due to contracting issues between Disney and Sony, Holland’s rendition of Spider-Man may never be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe again. 

Before the dispute, Disney had the main distribution of finance, plus full ownership of Marvel merchandise. Disney wouldn’t agree to Sony’s 50/50 co-financing offer, which led to Sony taking back the full rights for Spider-Man. After disputes between the two companies, Marvel Studios president/producer Kevin Feige has removed himself from producing the future Spider-Man films.

I’m skeptical about the future Spider-Man movies because Feige played such a large part in making the Spider-Man films great. Without a good producer, there is no movie. Will the future films have the same lighthearted vibes with relevant teenaged themes? The past Spider-Man films featuring Toby McGuire and Andrew Garfield had very dark themes throughout the movies, but what I enjoyed about the MCU Spider-Man is the whimsical and bubbly way they portrayed Peter. Will that change with new directors and producers? 

Personally I think the hate against Sony is uncalled for. Fans have been using #boycottsony, to show their hate for Sony’s new financing proposal, but Disney is the one who won’t agree to Sony’s terms. Also Stan Lee’s daughter is in support of Sony, claiming Disney “commoditized my father’s work and never show[ed] him or his legacy any respect or decency.”

The divorce between the two companies remains uncertain as Sony takes back full rights to Spider-Man, while Marvel keeps rights to Spider-Man merchandise and continues to use the superhero within the Marvel comic universe. 

Despite the controversy between companies, Tom Holland remains the best Spider-Man; even Stan Lee claimed Holland is exactly who he “envisioned” as Spider-Man. The actor’s personality is super charismatic and energetic, matching the youthful character that the comics depict. So it’s a huge waste that they are removing the perfect Spider-Man actor at the most integral part of his development.

Also, I fully believe chemistry between characters in movies is only great when the actors get along off screen. Through behind the scenes footage and social media, you can see how the cast gets along with Holland. A large part of Peter Parker’s character development is involved with Tony Stark and his legacy; if Sony has full rights over Spider-Man, does all of Tony’s influence just vanish? It’s just too confusing to take out an important character who should be leading the next generation of Avengers, as well as removing the Avengers from Peter Parker’s story. 

Future MCU storylines will be affected by Spidey’s disappearance. An actor friend of mine who was in the talks of auditioning for Miles Morales (Spider-Man in another dimension), is worried that auditions for the role will be halted. Especially since the multiverse was mentioned in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” hinting at the additions of Miles Morales or other versions of the web slinger. Sony Pictures Animation has full rights along with Columbia Pictures to “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse,” so could that possibly ruin Marvel’s plans to incorporate characters like Gwen Stacy’s Spidergwen or Miles Morales? 

Hopefully, Disney and Sony come to an agreement and keep Holland’s Spidey in the MCU. The future for the web slinger is uncertain, but I’m just glad that Tom Holland will continue to play Peter Parker.
